چکیده / توضیح The last three decades have witnessed major advances in many-valued logic and related fields. The theory of Łukasiewicz logic and Chang’s MV-algebras has flourished, establishing profound connections with other fields of mathematics; Petr Hájek’s framework for mathematical fuzzy logic has met with remarkable success, bringing into focus the central rôle of residuation; and the algebraic analysis of substructural logics via residuated lattices has proved itself most fruitful, providing an illuminating bridge between algebra and proof theory. Many-valued logic is here to stay—or so it seems today.

چکیده / توضیح In the present issue of Soft-Computing, it is a pleasure to present you a selection of 11 extended versions of selected papers from the eleventh edition of the International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Networks (IWANN’2011) held in Torremolinos (Spain) during June 8–10, 2011. IWANN is a biennial conference that seeks to provide a discussion forum for scientists, engineers, educators and students about the latest ideas and realizations in the foundations, theory, models and applications of hybrid systems inspired on nature (neural networks, fuzzy logic and evolutionary systems) as well as in emerging areas related to the above items. As in previous editions of IWANN, it also aims to create a friendly environment that could lead to the establishment of scientific collaborations and exchanges among attendees.

چکیده / توضیح Ultrafiltration has been successfully used for particle elimination in municipal drinking-water treatment for 10 years. This method is a reliable means of obtaining a water quality that permits efficient disinfection. This article discusses the experience so far gained in the operation of such plants and demonstrates the possibilities afforded by combining ultra-filtration with flocculation and proportioning of the powder activated-carbon. In addition to the steady reduction in membrane cost, the present developments in the field of plant construction allow additional economies in capital investment.

چکیده / توضیح In this paper, we give characterizations of ordered semigroups in terms of (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy interior ideals. We characterize different classes regular (resp. intra-regular, simple and semisimple) ordered semigroups in terms of (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy interior ideals (resp. (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy ideals). In this regard, we prove that in regular (resp. intra-regular and semisimple) ordered semigroups the concept of (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy ideals and (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy interior ideals coincide. We prove that an ordered semigroup S is simple if and only if it is (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy simple. We characterize intra-regular (resp. semisimple) ordered semigroups in terms of (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy ideals (resp. (∈, ∈ ∨q)-fuzzy interior ideals). Finally, we consider the concept of implication-based fuzzy interior ideals in an ordered semigroup, in particular, the implication operators in Lukasiewicz system of continuous-valued logic are discussed.

Evaluated by the contributions and the recommendation of ISNN 2012 organizers, 22 papers were selected for the further review process with their extended form. Each paper has been reviewed thoroughly by three independent experts in related research area. We are very grateful for the hard work of the reviewers, which help to facilitate the outcome of this special issue with greatly improved quality of the contributions. Finally, 20 papers are accepted, to be introduced as follows.

چکیده / توضیح Fuzzy logic was applied as a methodology to create an objective calendar of daily atmospheric circulation based on an existing atmospheric circulation classification system for Poland called the Osuchowska-Klein method, which includes 13 circulation patterns. In this study, circulation patterns given by Osuchowska-Klein were expressed as normalized values of sea level pressure in a regular 5° × 5° grid over the area of interest. Cases of daily atmospheric circulation (i.e., normalized values for the same domain) observed from January 1948 to December 2007 were defined in the same manner. The pattern-matching procedure employed in the study was made objective with the application of fuzzy logic sets in a few steps as follows: (1) discrimination and grouping of grid points as well as their classification in order to clearly define each Osuchowska-Klein circulation pattern, (2) calculation of the similarity between observed normalized pressure and that of the pattern at each selected grid point using a membership function, (3) determination of the degree of fulfillment for every class of grid points, (4) determination of the degree of a case and pattern, (5) selection of the circulation type for a particular day based on the degree of fulfillment for each pattern. The largest value of the degree of fulfillment indicates the type of circulation pattern on any given day. Finally, a validation of the obtained results is discussed. This was accomplished using the chi-square test and a comparison of consistency between the traditional and objective approach types. The results do show some differences between the subjective and objective methods, however, they are not major differences, especially when taking into account the fact that the two methods are quite different, as well as the complex nature of pressure systems.

چکیده / توضیح Key to sound validation studies is the formalization and harmonization of procedures for design of experiment and interpretation of results. International guidelines (ISO 5725, ENGL) are available for the validation of GMO detection methods, and ad-hoc validation statistics (e.g. per cent bias, repeatability and reproducibility) are used for in-house and inter-laboratory testing and decision-making. Acceptability criteria have been set but not every situation can be covered by a preset rule; the interpretation of results in validation largely depends on expert judgement being a matter of professional judgment and expertise. Fuzzy logic-based techniques may be used to summarize the information obtained by independent validation statistics and are helpful in such respect. A comprehensive indicator of method performance permits direct comparison between methods and facilitates the evaluation of multiple, yet contradictory statistics. The European Union Reference Laboratory for GM Food and Feed has already proposed the fuzzy principle in the context of method validation. Other studies have also proved its applicability in other areas of GMO analysis, but the application has been limited hitherto. In this article, we review the fuzzy logic principle and its potential to support the continuous progress of GMO science and routine laboratory analyses.

چکیده / توضیح The aim of this research was to predict groundwater levels in the Neishaboor plain, Iran, using a “panel-data” model. Panel-data analysis endows regression analysis with both spatial and temporal dimensions. The spatial dimension pertains to a set of cross-sectional units of observation. The temporal dimension pertains to periodic observations of a set of variables characterizing these cross-sectional units over a particular time span. Firstly, the available observation wells in the Neishaboor plain were clustered according to their fluctuation behavior using the “Ward” method, which resulted in six areal zones. Then, for each cluster, an observation well was selected as its representative, and for each zone, values of monthly precipitation and temperature, as independent variables, were estimated by the inverse-distance method. Finally, the performance of different panel-data regression models such as fixed-effects and random-effects models were investigated. The results showed that the two-way fixed-effects model was superior. The performance indicators for this model (R 2 = 0.97, RMSE = 0.05 m and ME = 0.81 m) reveal the effectiveness of the method. In addition, the results were compared with the results of an artificial-neural-network (ANN) model, which demonstrated the superiority of the panel-data model over the ANN model.
