چکیده / توضیح Genetic programming has now been used to produce at least 76 instances of results that are competitive with human-produced results. These human-competitive results come from a wide variety of fields, including quantum computing circuits, analog electrical circuits, antennas, mechanical systems, controllers, game playing, finite algebras, photonic systems, image recognition, optical lens systems, mathematical algorithms, cellular automata rules, bioinformatics, sorting networks, robotics, assembly code generation, software repair, scheduling, communication protocols, symbolic regression, reverse engineering, and empirical model discovery. This paper observes that, despite considerable variation in the techniques employed by the various researchers and research groups that produced these human-competitive results, many of the results share several common features. Many of the results were achieved by using a developmental process and by using native representations regularly used by engineers in the fields involved. The best individual in the initial generation of the run of genetic programming often contains only a small number of operative parts. Most of the results that duplicated the functionality of previously issued patents were novel solutions, not infringing solutions. In addition, the production of human-competitive results, as well as the increased intricacy of the results, are broadly correlated to increased availability of computing power tracked by Moore’s law. The paper ends by predicting that the increased availability of computing power (through both parallel computing and Moore’s law) should result in the production, in the future, of an increasing flow of human-competitive results, as well as more intricate and impressive results.

چکیده / توضیح To gain a competitive edge, companies must continually invest in new product development (NPD), and must decide how to strategically allocate limited resources. The most critical NPD activity is the accurate assessment of the attractiveness of new products, simultaneously considering favorable factors (project value and strategic fit) and unfavorable factors (project risks), especially in robust companies in developing countries. In the NPD development process, the attractiveness of products is often evaluated using information that is imprecise or ambiguous. Fuzzy logic is well-suited to inform NPD decision-making. Thus, a comprehensive method considering both favorable and unfavorable factors, and using a fuzzy weighted average to devise a fuzzy possible-attractiveness rating (FPAR) of an NPD project for portfolio selection, is proposed in this paper. FPAR is a measurement of information, which is able to retain the multiplicity of that information. The proposed evaluation technique was demonstrated using a Taiwanese company as an example. The results indicated that this method provided an accurate assessment of overall product attractiveness, necessary for obtaining organizational buy-in, and can effectively aid managers to conduct sensitive analyses, balance the impact of changes in strategy, and receive quick feedback on the results of such changes.

چکیده / توضیح Although there are various indications and claims that jellyfish (i.e., scyphozoans, cubozoans, most hydrozoans, ctenophores, and salps) have been increasing at a global scale in recent decades, a rigorous demonstration of this has never been presented. Because this is mainly due to scarcity of quantitative time series of jellyfish abundance from scientific surveys, we attempt to complement such data with non-conventional information from other sources. This was accomplished using the analytical framework of fuzzy logic, which allows the combination of information with variable degrees of cardinality, reliability, and temporal and spatial coverage. Data were aggregated and analyzed at the scale of Large Marine Ecosystem (LME). Of the 66 LMEs defined thus far that cover the world’s coastal waters and seas, trends of jellyfish abundance after 1950 (increasing, decreasing, or stable/variable) were identified for 45, with variable degrees of confidence. Of those 45 LMEs, the majority (28 or 62%) showed increasing trends. These changes are discussed in the context of possible sources of bias and uncertainty, along with previously proposed hypotheses to explain increases in jellyfish.

چکیده / توضیح The ePAL initiative aimed at developing a roadmap for extension of professional active life of the retiring and retired knowledge workers in developed countries and specifically in Europe. Three main perspectives are identified in this roadmap, and defined to comprehensively address relevant dimensions of the ePAL environment. These three perspectives consist of: (1) the technological perspective that addresses the needed technology and the support services, (2) the societal perspective that addresses both the human factors and the societal aspects, and (3) the organizational perspective that addresses both the economic / managerial and governmental aspects of these environments. This document however aims to zoom in on the technological perspective of the roadmap. Following a brief description of the three main perspectives of the ePAL environment, it introduces the four main ICT research and development areas that are identified for strengthening and realization of active ageing. The technological perspective of the ePAL’s vision constitutes a substantial part of the roadmap recommendations. This article further addresses the state of the art in each of these four areas and exemplifies their application needs in the ePAL environment.

چکیده / توضیح Archaeological predictive modeling has been used successfully for over 20 years as a decision-making tool in cultural resources management. Its appreciation in academic circles however has been mixed because of its perceived theoretical poverty. In this paper, we discuss the issue of integrating current archaeological theoretical approaches and predictive modeling. We suggest a methodology for doing so based on cognitive archaeology, middle range theory, and paleoeconomic modeling. We also discuss the problems associated with testing predictive models.

Intelligent and adaptive algorithms applications to the developed multimodal interfaces are discussed.

چکیده / توضیح Personalization and context-awareness are highly important topics in research on Intelligent Information Systems. In the fields of Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and Music Recommendation in particular, user-centric algorithms should ideally provide music that perfectly fits each individual listener in each imaginable situation and for each of her information or entertainment needs. Even though preliminary steps towards such systems have recently been presented at the “International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference” (ISMIR) and at similar venues, this vision is still far away from becoming a reality. In this article, we investigate and discuss literature on the topic of user-centric music retrieval and reflect on why the breakthrough in this field has not been achieved yet. Given the different expertises of the authors, we shed light on why this topic is a particularly challenging one, taking computer science and psychology points of view. Whereas the computer science aspect centers on the problems of user modeling, machine learning, and evaluation, the psychological discussion is mainly concerned with proper experimental design and interpretation of the results of an experiment. We further present our ideas on aspects crucial to consider when elaborating user-aware music retrieval systems.

چکیده / توضیح This paper develops an automatic welding control scheme for alternating current shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) system. A mathematical model of the welding control system is derived and the system parameters identified. An adaptive sliding mode controller is designed to estimate the bound of the system uncertainties and to modulate the electrode feed rate in such a way that the desired arc length and arc current are maintained as the electrode melts during the welding process. The proposed control method is suitable for any consumed electrode welding technique. The simulation and experimental results show that the automatic welding control system successfully maintains the magnitude of the arc current at the desired value and preserves the arc stability, thereby obtaining an enhanced SMAW control system performance.

چکیده / توضیح A soft computing system used to optimize deep drilling operations under high-speed conditions in the manufacture of steel components is presented. The input data includes cutting parameters and axial cutting force obtained from the power consumption of the feed motor of the milling centres. Two different coolant strategies are tested: traditional working fluid and Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL). The model is constructed in three phases. First, a new strategy is proposed to evaluate and complete the set of available measurements. The primary objective of this phase is to decide whether further drilling experiments are required to develop an accurate roughness prediction model. An important aspect of the proposed strategy is the imputation of missing data, which is used to fully exploit both complete and incomplete measurements. The proposed imputation algorithm is based on a genetic algorithm and aims to improve prediction accuracy. In the second phase, a bag of multilayer perceptrons is used to model the impact of deep drilling settings on borehole roughness. Finally, this model is supplied with the borehole dimensions, coolant option and expected axial force to develop a 3D surface showing the expected borehole roughness as a function of drilling process settings. This plot is the necessary output of the model for its use under real workshop conditions. The proposed system is capable of approximating the optimal model used to control deep drilling tasks on steel components for industrial use.

چکیده / توضیح Efficacious integration of such CAx technologies as CAD, CAM and CAPP still remains a problem in engineering practice which constantly attracts research attention. Design by feature model is assumed as a main factor in the integration effort in various engineering and manufacturing domains. It refers principally to feature clustering and consequently operation sequencing in elaborated process plan designs. The focus of this paper is on CAPP for parts manufacture in systems of definite processing capabilities, involving multi-axis machining centres. A methodical approach is proposed to optimally solve for process planning problems, which consists in the identification of process alternatives and sequencing adequate working steps. The approach involves the use of the branch and bound concept from the field of artificial intelligence. A conceptual scheme for generation of alternative process plans in the form of a network is developed. It is based on part design data modelling in terms of machining features. A relevant algorithm is proposed for creating such a network and searching for the optimal process plan solution from the viewpoint of its operational performance, under formulated process constraints. The feasibility of the approach and the algorithm are illustrated by a numerical case with regard to a real application and diverse machine tools with relevant tooling. Generated process alternatives for complex machining with given systems, are studied using models programmed in the environment of Matlab® software.
