چکیده / توضیح Most of the diffusion models of chloride ions in reinforced concrete (RC) elements proposed in literature are related to an isotropic homogeneous semi-infinite medium. This assumption reduces the mathematical complexity, but it is correct only for plane RC elements. This work proposes a comparison between the diffusion model of chloride ions in RC circular columns and in RC slab elements. The durability of RC cylindric elements estimated with the circular model instead of the plane model is shown to be shorter. Finally, a guideline is formulated to properly use the standard and more simple plane model instead of the circular one to estimate the time to corrosion initiation of cylindrical RC elements.

چکیده / توضیح Estimation of the residual strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams has been studied from experimental and theoretical perspectives. The former is arduous as it involves casting beams of various sizes, which are then subjected to various degrees of corrosion damage. The latter are static; hence cannot be generalized as new coefficients need to be re-generated for new cases. This calls for dynamic models that are adaptive to new cases and offer efficient generalization capability. Computational intelligence techniques have been applied in Construction Engineering modeling problems. However, these techniques have not been adequately applied to the problem addressed in this paper. This study extends the empirical model proposed by Azad et al. (Mag Concr Res 62(6):405–414, 2010), which considered all the adverse effects of corrosion on steel. We proposed four artificial neural networks (ANN) models to predict the residual flexural strength of corroded RC beams using the same data from Azad et al. (2010). We employed two modes of prediction: through the correction factor (C f ) and through the residual strength (M res ). For each mode, we studied the effect of fixed and random data stratification on the performance of the models. The results of the ANN models were found to be in good agreement with experimental values. When compared with the results of Azad et al. (2010), the ANN model with randomized data stratification gave a C f -based prediction with up to 49 % improvement in correlation coefficient and 92 % error reduction. This confirms the reliability of ANN over the empirical models.

چکیده / توضیح Automotive emission is becoming a critical threat to today’s human health. Many researchers are studying engine designs leading to less fuel consumption. Gearbox selection plays a key role in an engine design. In this study, Taguchi quality engineering method is employed, and optimum gear ratios in a five speed gear box is obtained. A table of various gear ratios is suggested by design of experiment techniques. Fuel consumption is calculated through simulating the corresponding combustion dynamics model. Using a 95 % confidence level, optimal parameter combinations are determined using the Taguchi method. The level of importance of the parameters on the fuel efficiency is resolved using the analysis of signal-to-noise ratio as well as analysis of variance.

چکیده / توضیح In today’s highly rival market, an effective supplier selection process is vital to the success of any manufacturing system. Selecting the appropriate supplier is always a difficult task because suppliers posses varied strengths and weaknesses that necessitate careful evaluations prior to suppliers’ ranking. This is a complex process with many subjective and objective factors to consider before the benefits of supplier selection are achieved. This paper identifies six extremely critical criteria and thirteen sub-criteria based on the literature. A new methodology employing those criteria and sub-criteria is proposed for the assessment and ranking of a given set of suppliers. To handle the subjectivity of the decision maker’s assessment, an integration of fuzzy Delphi with fuzzy inference system has been applied and a new ranking method is proposed for supplier selection problem. This supplier selection model enables decision makers to rank the suppliers based on three classifications including “extremely preferred”, “moderately preferred”, and “weakly preferred”. In addition, in each classification, suppliers are put in order from highest final score to the lowest. Finally, the methodology is verified and validated through an example of a numerical test bed.

چکیده / توضیح Lean production has become an integral part of the manufacturing landscape as its link with superior performance and its ability to provide competitive advantage is well accepted among academics and practitioners. Lean production helps producers in overcoming the challenges organizations face through using powerful tools and enablers. However, most companies are faced with restricted resources such as financial and human resources, time, etc., in using these enablers, and are not capable of implementing all these techniques. Therefore, identifying and selecting the most appropriate and efficient tool can be a significant challenge for many companies. Hence, this literature seeks to combine competitive advantages, lean attributes, and lean enablers to determine the most appropriate enablers for improvement of lean attributes. Quality function deployment in fuzzy environment and house of quality matrix are implemented. Throughout the methodology, fuzzy logic is the basis for translating linguistic judgments required for the relationships and correlation matrix to numerical values. Moreover, for final ranking of lean enablers, a multi-criteria decision-making method (PROMETHEE) is adopted. Finally, a case study in automotive industry is presented to illustrate the implementation of the proposed methodology.

چکیده / توضیح A motivation for using fuzzy systems stems in part from the fact that they are particularly suitable for processes when the physical systems or qualitative criteria are too complex to model and they have provided an efficient and effective way in the control of complex uncertain nonlinear systems. To realize a fuzzy model-based design for chaotic systems, it is mostly preferred to represent them by T–S fuzzy models. In this paper, a new fuzzy modeling method has been introduced for chaotic systems via the interval type-2 Takagi–Sugeno (IT2 T–S) fuzzy model. An IT2 fuzzy model is proposed to represent a chaotic system subjected to parametric uncertainty, covered by the lower and upper membership functions of the interval type-2 fuzzy sets. Investigating many well-known chaotic systems, it is obvious that nonlinear terms have a single common variable or they depend only on one variable. If it is taken as the premise variable of fuzzy rules and another premise variable is defined subject to parametric uncertainties, a simple IT2 T–S fuzzy dynamical model can be obtained and will represent many well-known chaotic systems. This IT2 T–S fuzzy model can be used for physical application, chaotic synchronization, etc. The proposed approach is numerically applied to the well-known Lorenz system and Rossler system in MATLAB environment.

چکیده / توضیح The uncertainty caused by the discontinuous nature of wind energy affects the power grid. Hence, forecasting the behavior of this renewable resource is important for energy managers and electricity traders to overcome the risk of unpredictability and to provide reliability for the grid. The objective of this paper is to employ and compare the potential of various artificial neural network structures of multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function for prediction of the wind velocity time series in Tehran, Iran. Structure analysis and performance evaluations of the established networks indicate that the MLP network with a 4-7-13-1 architecture is superior to others. The best networks were deployed to unseen data and were capable of predicting the velocity time series via using the sliding window technique successfully. Applying the statistical indices with the predicted and the actual test data resulted in acceptable RMSE, MSE and R 2 values with 1.19, 1.43 and 0.85, respectively, for the best network.

چکیده / توضیح Today’s most prevalent bone disease in the western hemisphere is osteoporosis. Predominantly postmenopausal women and older men suffer from bone loss caused by an imbalance in the physiological tissue renewal process between bone formation and resorption. As a result, osteoporosis is associated with fragility fractures, disability, impaired bone regeneration and increased mortality. The World Health Organization based the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements using dual X-ray absorptiometry. However, BMD measurements are limited in discriminating subjects with and without osteoporotic fractures and have been shown to only partly reflect successful treatment of osteoporotic fractures. Bone microstructure is an integral determinant of bone strength. Today, new high-resolution imaging techniques such as high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography and high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging make it possible to measure three-dimensional bone microarchitecture and volumetric bone mineral density with high accuracy and a relatively low radiation dose.

چکیده / توضیح Piezoelectric ceramics are extensively investigated materials for transducer application. The selection of optimal piezoelectric material for this particular application is a tedious task. It depends upon various physical properties, including piezoelectric charge coefficient (d 33), electromechanical coupling factor (K p), dielectric constant (ɛ r), and dielectric loss (tanδ). The classical multiple attribute decision making (MADM) can be used for decision making if these properties are known precisely. However, these properties cannot be expressed by exact numerical values, since they are dependent upon the microstructure and fabrication process. Fuzzy-based MADM approaches can be helpful in such cases. In this paper, we have determined the ranks and rank indices (for degree of closeness) of important piezoelectric materials using fuzzy VlseKriterijumska Optimisacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) technique. PLZT(8/65/35) ((Pb1−x La x )(Zr y Ti1−y )O3) and KNN-LT-LS ((K0.44Na0.52Li0.04)-(Nb0.84Ta0.10Sb0.06)O3) consecutively are found to be the top-rank piezoelectric ceramics. This indicates that KNN-LT-LS can be used on behalf of lead-based piezo-ceramics.
